I'm thinking about rewriting the Summoner class almost in its entirety. Mostly to include an ability that should have been added long ago: A summoning companion.

I'd like to hear some thoughts about that idea. Think it's worth it? The summoner class right now is pretty dull.

A summoning companion? Meh... not want it.

A talent tree like genjutsu master or taijutsu master, or puppeteer would still be nice. Very Happy

Apart from that, I have no opinion

I like it, but first a few questions. How long would the companion be out per say... all the time or just a daily chakra cost. Also, would it be limited to normal summons or sires and broodlords as well...

Seems to me that it would probably be likened unto a Sorcerer's familiar.

If anything, it would be like Jiraiya and Gamabunta.

While it would be nice (in theory) to have a talent tree for all of the advanced classes, it is a BITCH to come up with things to put in it. I've tried, and it isn't as easy as it sounds.

And while I agree the Summoner class could do well with a reworking, I honestly don't have any constructive input at all.

Moreover, it's a bitch to come up with NPCs when you have to not only choose the classes, but you have to choose a dozen abilities from up to 5 different pools.

It's not going to happen. Ever. You can stop asking.

So when you start out would you get a sire/broodlord and it would gain say bonuses for the more levels you have in summoner class, say shifting from soldiers to eventually avatar? If so, that would be cool

i like the idea involving gamabunta. the summoner could have a familiar type summon that costs chakra and isnt just some random summon, but one he is familar with and has formed some sort of friendship or mutual gain. sounds like an idea worth hashing around a bit.

In all honesty it can just be a special summon with longer duration and of course a few fitting special abilities/techniques.

Honestly I'm liking the idea of a faithful summon, that's slightly more powerful or specialized for my needs. Having it like a familure from DnD might be more of a hiderance though. What about setting it up like the templete that gives you a nin animal companion, only with your particular animal summon type. Maybe a few adjustments to the progression chart, to fit a base 10 class.

I also think that would fit better with the world, considering anyone of note from Naruto that summoned had a goto summon that they tried before anything else.

Pick up the Conjurer's Codex. It's now a feat among other cool stuff.

What about "Alternate Class Features"?

Has the advantage of allowing for a little bit of tweaking, while not adding to the default complexity?

Like, if you make a Cha 5/Summoner 5, you just go through it like normal.
If you instead decide that this summoner is different, you swap out features where approriate.

(Not sure what I'd do with Summoner, but I see that as a best of both worlds.)

I actually had a thought on this a while ago, and made my own house rule small change to the summoning class. At the time, conjurer's codex hadn't been released, and I felt like the class was missing something. My solution was a player with a certain number of summoner levels would be allowed to design an elite summon how they wish-gm still as the right to refuse builds for the summon, tho if they stick to the feats in the summons section as a guideline, it usually ends up ok. The summoner then can use said summon without having to trip into it via normal processes. The pinnacle at summon level 7 was to be able to do the same with a paragon.

At the risk of starting an argument, I still favor this approach over the familiar feat in conjurer's codex, simply because I think the CP cost reduction is too extreme at higher levels. The concept is sound, but is a bit too overpower in my mind.

Alternate solutions might be to combine the approaches, and say make a feat that lets you make a summon, requiring x summoner levels, there are many options/ideas.

Just my 2 cents

This one's actually only a couple months old, far from necromancy...more like ressucitation.
