Basically, the funniest moments in a d20 game you've been in that have either taken the rules to new extremes, or outright broke them. I'll start off with my story, the Great Cleave Express. In which the fighter, arguing with the GM that a blade of grass counts as living things, and thus has hit points, used the Great Cleave ability to hack through the grass and carry on. Seeing as it allows a 5 ft. step between each attacks as long as you keep hitting, he managed to cover the span of several hundred miles in the space of a single round..... The look on the DM's face when he realised what he had created.

My first time dming an epic campaign I had all the players make undead characters. One of the players was a very dilligent mage who found the spell: reverse gravity. needless to say entire regiments of paladins became astronauts shortly thereafter.

That requires...a lot of arguing to work...still amusing but still requires GM leeway to work.

And speaking of which, let's go ahead and explain why that doesn't work.

Great cleave allows you to attack another OPPONENT when you reduce any opponent to 0 hit points or lower.

Great Cleave does NOT allow you to take a 5-ft. step between each attacks. That's an ability called Supreme Cleave, of the Frenzied Berserker class, and it lets you take your 5-ft. step between cleave attempts (and not just attacks of a full-attack), but no more than once per round.

I think that's it.

I wanted to say something but was to lazy to look it up, and therefore didn't want to post based on a guess. But yea, it allows you to attack an adjacent opponent assuming you killed or knocked them out. Then you can take a 5ft step (if needed) to attack another opponent at the same bonus as the previous attack.

The difference with great cleave is that it removes the once per round limit but you have to kill the enemy in a single hit after the first to move on to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. and even then they have to be within 5ft of the other.

Allowing our specialist melee builds to slaughter groups of goblins, genin, stormtroopers (pending your system) etc. in mass melee combat.

No 5-ft. step unless you have Supreme Cleave.

Yeah? That makes sense I guess. I wasn't DMing, so I didn't know the full rules. And apparently, neither did the DM. Still, as hilarious as ever.

Not according to the d20 SRD, unless they changed something because I admit I haven't updated it in a while... looking around I don't see why my SRD says otherwise and why we've run it that way. Hell, I don't even see Supreme Cleave and I have every book (may be overlooking it).

It's a class feature of Frenzied Berserker from Complete warrior.

Also, I don't see how he could do this since Cleave specifically states that you cannot make a 5-foot step in between attacks... at least the version I'm looking at. And all Great Cleave does is remove the limit to the number of times you can use cleave per round.

And EVEN Supreme Cleave only lets you take a SINGLE 5-foot step per round if you haven't already done it, similar to the way you can take a SINGLE 5-foot step between attacks of a full-attack action.

It was also an ability of the Master Samurai from Sword and Fist. It was the first prestige class I ever went.

Not really rule breaking as much as story breaking.

Playing with my regular D&D V3.5 group at the time we started a new adventure and new characters. Well the Halfling thief touched the "dwarf Water". Touching the water slowly turns you into a dwarf. Once the player found out he was a bit pissed about it. Some reason he hated dwarf characters. Anyway, he decided to grab a wineskin full of the stuff. No one understoof why. Heck I don't think he really knew at the time. Just figured it could be useful later.

So later comes, by now he is 50% dwarf and Halfling. His character was beginning to like being dwarf and motivations were changing, perhaps to not even be a theif anymore, etc...

We run into a major enemy. The DM unbeknownst to us had grandiose plans for this baddy. A female mage who was a mastermind, to this game. She was beating us up pretty badly, but we finally got the edge. The DMs goal was as soon as things got dangerous got this baddy she'd teleport out of there to safety to bother us again later. Well, Mr. halfling gets an idea, and he succeeds in criting a pickpocket and grabs away the mages staff (Very powerful and unexpected to the DM.) Then the Mage is about to teleport when the halfling announces that not only was he picking the staff but he was splashing the dwarf water on her. Another roll, and amazingly another crit. he hits her as she teleports away.

Now based on this dwarf water rules she'd turn into a dwarf in a matter of a month if she didn't have the antidote which happened to be in this room. A spring. Well, she was screwed really. As such the DM had to concoct her coming back in and getting the spring water too, but problem was we were there for some time for other stuff. Now, her motivations, etc... would change as she became a dwarf, etc... and alone she could not yet beat the group. LOL. Was all very funny at the time because the DM was white and then red faced as it all went down.

Plot breaking? That's a wonderful opportunity! I wish my players thought of using stuff like that when I was DM'ing 3.5 games. I can think of nigh limitless possibilities that could come from the big bad mage turning dwarf, plenty of which would be horrible for the PCs Twisted Evil

If you present your players with a world altering plot device and they don't use it against you, I don't want to know them. :P

This was a custom d20 to introduce my players to the dice thing, and one of them had the power to summon anything... With practise. For months in game, all that was heard from his room was explosions, before he finally mastered summing nuclear bombs.
/me bangs head against table.
His favourite mode of transport then became sticking a nuclear bomb on the back of his summoned pink trike, and blasting his way at a speed much quicker than the sound barrier, to his destination, rolling nothing but 20s on his fort save
/me bangs head against table.
So what did this teach him? When you are doing something insane, always rely on a 20. It worked.
/me screams and goes insane, forever banging his head against tables till the end of time.

(I could fill many more posts with further stories, my group is literally insane.)

(if you want to hear them, they are: sticks, bluffs and assassins. Mafia bananas, dodgy armour, miming going wrong, death to potatoes, heart surgery, and power gaming.) (most of these are more plot breaking rather than rule breaking.)
