Hello!

I'm very new to NarutoD20, though something of a veteran of most D20 systems (Primarily 3.5/Pathfinder)

I was hoping for an effective either Ninjutsu or Genjutsu character (haven't decided yet..) centered around Uchiha. We're starting at level 1 in the Academy to help get everyone used to the system, but expect rapid advancement to level 3 over the course of a few sessions.

Our campaign is set some 50 years after the beginning of Naruto's stint as Hokage. My character in particular is an Orphan found horribly burned on the edge of Leaf territory. He isn't aware of his Uchiha lineage currently, but I realize the Occupation and Advanced Bloodline will need to be taken at level 1.

So yeah.. a general point in the right direction and some opinions would be really appreciated.

Well for starters, those rolls were very good, so your character will have great potential to do both Ninjutsu and Genjutsu effectively if you so choose. For instance:

Str 12
Dex 14
Con 15
Int 17 (18?)
Wis 13
Cha 18 (17?)

Intelligence determines Ninjutsu skill while Charisma determines Genjutsu. A slightly higher Constitution will beef up the character in order to survive in battles where range isn't possible in addition to increasing chakra pool for jutsu spamming. Moderate Dex for obvious reasons. And a 13 in Wisdom in case you want to bump it up later down the road to a 14 for chakra control and Will saves. Dump score was Strength, although a 12 at level 1 with a Nin/Gen oriented character is pretty nice.

Next, if you are allowed to choose your occupation, you have to decide if you want to use Uchiha Clan despite your character's backstory or if you'd rather keep it simple and be an Academy Student or Mentored.

With Uchiha Clan, you lose 1 permanent class skill (as it only grants 2) but you can take Advanced Bloodline as a bonus feat and reserve your two 1st level feats for other things.

Choosing the latter will give you 3 permanent class skills and some decent beginner feats like Combat Martial Arts, Ninjutsu/Genjustsu Adept, or Dodge. Mentored also offers Genius Ninja which is always a nice option because it allows you to learn techs that are one rank higher than your character level while granting you a +2 bonus to learn checks.

Then you have to decide which route you want your character to go early on: Ninjutsu or Genjutsu. Because you'll probably want to be Smart Hero/Paragon or Charismatic Hero/Paragon. (Paragon classes are in the Prodigy to Paragon supplement)

From there, the variables become near impossible to predict. You'll just have to plan a few levels in advance and be ready to change things up at a moment's notice in accordance with the flow and objectives of the game. But as a seasoned D20 player, I'm sure you know that part, lol.

Alternate ideas:

Genjutsu Fighter

Str 17 (15?)
Dex 15 (17?)
Con 14
Int 12
Wis 13
Cha 18

In this build, you use Genjutsu to daze, stun, intimidate, or confuse opponents so you can create openings for physical attacks. Strength OR Dexterity is good for this build, although weapon finesse would be required for the Dex style so you can boost your melee bonus accordingly. This one works nicely because the Sharingan offers pretty solid bloodline Genjutsus as well as attack and defense bonuses from the Sharingan Eye and Offensive Foresight abilities.

Ninjutsu Spammer

Str 13
Dex 14
Con 17
Int 18
Wis 15
Cha 12

This build is extremely simple. High intelligence for Ninjutsu skill. High Con for chakra pool. Moderate Wisdom for tapping chakra reserves. Moderate Dex to bolster defense and give you the option to utilize the hide and move silently skills more effectively if you decide to be stealth bomber. Ninjutsu Adept and Genius Ninja (Ninjutsu) will increase jutsu effectiveness early on. Or you can begin grabbing up Meta-Chakra feats early for the future, as many of them will heavily increase the effectiveness and power of your techniques (e.g. Empower Technique and Maximize Technique for damage, Enlarge Technique and Widen technique for range, Efficient Technique to lower cost, etc.). Start with Smart Hero/Paragon, transitioning into Shinobi Adept. Then look into Elementalist and/or Technique Analyst and maybe Devastator as future Prestige classes.

Ultimately, however, it's all up to you; but I hope some of this helps. I'm sure others with even more experience than I can offer additional insight. And sorry for the wall of text. Good luck! Very Happy

One important question is how high level you expect to get over the course of the game. Planning for a character that will max out at level 5 or 6 can be very different than one that will progress to Jounin levels someday.

The Sharingan, like many Doujutsu bloodlines, gives bonuses that lend themselves well to Taijutsu. Even if you focus on Ninjutsu or Genjutsu, you may want to consider taking the Combat Martial Arts and Superior Combat Martial Arts feats; this will allow you do deal solid unarmed damage and still use hand seals for your primary techniques.

Ninjutsu is a really broad technique type, so it would help to know what your elemental affinity is and what types of other ninjutsu you'd be interested in.

Genjutsu is more focused, but overall a less versatile specialty; with a few exceptionS you get a lot of debuffs, some 'save or lose' attacks, and techs that let you cast illusions to affect the environment (mirages, stealth, etc). One potential issue is that Genjutsu techs are pretty underwhelming until you hit rank 6 or 7, so you'll need to rely on other techs if you want to deal damage.

PS That stat list is exactly why I make players use point buy in my games.

Thank you both for the quick replies!

Also, yes, the stats are absolutely broken. As a GM I insist on point buy as well, but my GM is really old school and like the variability of rolls, so I'll go with it Very Happy

With those stats you might be better off with a generalist sort of build. I had a character build with similar scores that never got used (game fell through), but I made him into a generalist bent towards Earth Ninjutsu and Unarmed Taijutsu. Fast Hero into Ninja Scout gave decent BAB, great defenses, and good class skills overall. Great stats let me stay within striking distance of the specialists with far more versatility. Add in the Sharingan to a similar setup and you could have an unpredictable powerhouse.

Generalist is becoming more and more appealing honestly.. especially since most Ninja in the Manga seem well rounded.

Unfortunately, I love Ninjutsu, especially Katon, so the desire to lean heavily towards it is pretty high..

Realistically you can't start to really specialize in Katon until level 7, through Elementalist. A generalist build will give you the same save DCs and damage, with only small buffs to skill checks and a bit more chakra. In exchange, your AC will be better, and you'll have enough HP to actually fight in melee. Make int your best stat, followed by Str, Con, and Dex. Good save DCs and lots of skill points, without sacrificing Taijutsu prowess at early levels
