This campaign will not be running for a while, (at least not until christmas), since I still need to iron out some details, but I was wondering what the reception would be to me using custom templates in a campaign, for the players, but not telling you what they do. So far these are the names of the templates (the players would be allowed to choose their template by name).

Burnt out (+2 ECL) (ninjutsu user)
Light dark sealed (+1 ECL) (any thing with techniques)
Reality weaver (genjutsu)
Other world called (take another template as well, this one is for the next campaign)
Catalyst (+1ECL) (any build)
Open spirit (+1ECL) (any build)
Ballistic (variable ECL) (any build)
First of the last (+1 ECL) (any buld, that does not disregard all physical things)
Pre-shade (+1 ECL) scout/tracker build)
True eye (+1 ECL) (any build, but probably slightly best for a tank/support char)
Seer of the end (no ECL) (any build, and you may wish to choose another template)

Taking a template would not be obligatory, but so far each one would play a unique roll in the storyline. Basically I am interested to see if people like the idea of not knowing what they are getting for their ECL until they discover it, or if they prefer knowing how they built their char and what it can do. (suggestions of what sort of build they would compliment will be given)

I recently did a one-shot of modern d20/Naruto d20, in which a mysterious poison gas caused the PC's (3 NYC cops. Original, I know) to wake up in a new world, with new bodies and new powers.

One had the Stone Skin bloodline, the other a transplanted Sharingan, and the final held the Ripper template. It quickly became a deep, descriptive horror, as the Ripper had a voice in his head that yelled at him to kill anybody who disagreed with him, and tried to seduce him with all the power in the world. (My explanation as to why Kakuzu flipped his shit so often and killed his partners). The Sharingan user had a "missing" eye (covered with a seal that prevented his bloodline from activating, the name escapes me), and when he finally activated his eye, spent the next minute throwing up because the contrasting visions were nauseating. And the Stone Skin guy failed his Fort save, so died immediately (he couldn't stay long).

The next few hours only 5 dice were rolled, the rest just immersing story-telling. And lots of villager death and rampages. Good, good times. I mark that campaign to being a huge success. Mainly because I had one of my players going pale and nearly throwing up.

The moral I'm trying to reach? It is a very good idea. But, you have to be prepared to put far more effort than usual into description.

Ok, I kinda already knew about how much effort would be required, thanks (this is one of the things that I have to iron out)

Another question then, is it a good idea to have some of these as unlockable along the way (kinda like sharingan but players don't know how to unlock it or what it does until they do and experiment.) (there will be hints for the less obvious ones).

Well, as with most things, the answer is never clear-cut. I think it comes down to your players. If you have experienced players who are knowledgable about the Naruto series, are willing to go that extra mile and are good at what I like to call "role-playing" instead of "roll-playing", then by all means.

If not, then don't even try. The players in question will get frustrated very quickly, and this becomes a horrible experience for all involved. It probably is going to depend on how well you know the players. I knew mine from way WAY back, and had GM'ed for them before. So, I knew the Ripper guy (part of my usual weekly group) to be far more experienced than Sharingan guy (only roleplays on a sporadic basis). Hence, I was able to modify the campaign to ensure he got as much enjoyment out of it as Ripper guy.

I questioned him afterwards, and he still didn't like it as much as he would have, mainly because he prefers to be characters who know their abilities, and enjoys clear-cut heroic style roleplaying. So, a vague and strange horror style roleplay? Not for him. He also tends to enjoy more control that I allowed, such as actually seeing his character sheet (added suspense, kept them from knowing their powers etc.)

Ripper guy, enjoyed it immensely. He was used to GM's pulling crazy and far-fetched shit like this, and the near lack of dice-rolling still didn't bother him. He would want to be in a similar game again. Chances are I'll run it.

So, the answer is yes and no. It depends on the players, as most games do. Thanks heavens for forums such as this. I'd hate to have to run the same type of game all the time.

all right, here are some of the campaign's details, but I will not be runniong for a while. This is just to allow players to decide whether or not they want to play. (will be sending the details on the char building later) (some of these are copied and pasted from my notes, so please excuse gramatical errors)

Reasons not to play:
First off, I would like to say that I have had many problem players in the past, and have no wish to repeat this, so if you know that you are a problem player, (hogs spotlight, unable to role-play, anything that is going to make me and the other players hate you) (that is not to say that there can be no jokes/lighthearted bits) then please do not join. Second off, my style is more role play/story intensive than anything else. Thirdly, I have very little experience with MIRC and so am not too good with many things (tacmaps, logs, etc.) Therefore, these things will need to be organised by you guys if you want them done (although I will try to give vivid enough descriptions of the area to not need tacmaps. Fourthly, I do not consider myself an amazing dm, since I have had very little experience with groups larger than two who are not all problem players, therefore, if there is anything that I do wrongly, or if I make a bad decision, please let me know. Second top last, I do not have very much time on my hands very often, and so have not read the rules of either d20 modern core, or nd20 front to cover, so if I make a mistake or miss something, please let me know. The final thing is that I donít have very flexible hours, and so the games can only run on Sundays, 8-12 nd20 time (and will occasionally have to be cancelled). That being said, I am more than capable of putting in the effort to making this game fun for all.

Scene:
kyomugakure, the village hidden in nothingness. A small village, ruled by a jounin (Arru Igakara) (not technically called kage), with a total of 3 chuunin mentors, and 2 chuunin for missions. There is a max of 7 academy students at a time and 6 in training genins. Therefore, genins get afforded much higher responsibilities. The village itself is on a small island, about 1 full day land hopping from one side to the other. The terrain, however is reasonably diverse, from snow to forests, to the long river that runs along the middle of it. It is about a 5 day sail from the main continent. It is a teardrop in shape, with temperature dropping from north to south. The north tip is desert, the South end is snow. The river runs right down the middle of the teardrop. The rest of the area is quite diverse, however nothing is quite as strange as where the village is located. A 100m diameter circle of wasteland in the middle of a rain forest opens into blackness with the presenting of the villageís symbol (picture a simplistic black hole that looks very like a shuriken skewered out of shape). How this came to be nobody particularly knows, but what is known is that once you fall into the nothingness, all laws of physics are void. In order to reach the village, one must remain totally focussed on where you are going. (An art that all of you have by now mastered). To exit, one must remain focussed on the exit. The village itself is a small affair, a population of about 100, and a force of no more ninjas than mentioned above. Due to the small number of ninjas though, each one is generally of a higher quality than one of another village of the same rank. I am going to leave the interior a relatively blank canvas, so that nearly any background you can imagine can happen. (provided it is not completely overpowered.

Timeline: same as normal series, but with many what ifs and buts, so do not assume anything is the same.

Well I am looking for 3-5 players, so to reserve a place, pick a template and afterwards make a char. (after I have released details on char building) If you are really serious about joining this, then please could you let me know which template you would like (to receive it and to let me know to get to work on it). (it is not necessary to take one, but will probably make it more fun.)

Some more info: this will be the first of a three part campaign, spanning several years between each one, (like a couple of generations). This one is: shadow 1, prelude to the end.

I'm interested as well, though as a warning I'm not very used to games that aren't face to face.

I have a couple questions
1. What supplements are allowed?
2. What is the starting level of the campaign?

As for templates...assuming I can use the supplement I would need and thus can make my #1 concept choice, I would like to use Seer of the End and either Pre-Shade, True Eye, or possibly First of the Last.

Backup concept would use Other World Call and Burnt Out.

Ok, well I am going to be merging first of the last and seer of the end into one template, so it is now just first of the last, (which I beleive is now reserved (sorry kekhsmuz)) as for char creation,

Supplements: Anything in naruto d20 (including all supplements, but I donít have any of them, so I will need a rough description of what anything you use from one does, also feats from d20 modern core can also be selected, but other than that, please see me about it, but probably no.

Char creation: level 1, (donít worry about ECL from custom templates, and up to +2 ECL in total (including my templates) that will be payed off as the campaign progresses) 36 point build, 1d4+1 techs, as for any templates, bloodlines, races, custom things, etc. See me, but usually I am going to allow anything.

House rules: With regard to experience, I work in % to next level rather than actual numbers.

When a 20 is not enough to succeed/get all positive effects, then an extra die roll is added on to the 20, (this can stack indefinitely). This is the same with a one, in that an extra die roll is taken away from the result. A one cannot reverse the rolling from (e.g. if a 1 is rolled, then a 1, another roll is not then added on to the result to allow a one to become a 20.)
Skill points with intelligence increases work by adding on a number of skill points equal to your level in the same level as the intelligence mod increase was acquired.

There is nothing more sickening than creating an awesome plan, then seeing the die land on a 1, so as compensation, I give out epic points for when an amazing plan was destroyed by a bad roll. When this happens, the epic point can be used to: gain an extra action, deduct one action from an opponent, use an action point without deducting from your total (and gaining an extra 1d4 to your roll), or force one roll to be deducted by 1d6+1d4. Also, if realistically, it is obvious that a plan should work, but you just donít have the actions, (I have had a few, where speed was everything, and I was left with nothing left after setting up my perfect opportunity, and forced to watch my opponent effortlessly escape), I may be tempted to award an epic point for use in doing this, if it obviously should work. Epic points have to be used in the encounter that they are received in, or else they are reset at zero, and you get no use from them. I can also be tempted to award epic points for when a character has a personal stake in the battle (rage mode).

(don't worry about this, since as I said, I have very little experience with IRC as well, (have done most of my games face to face with a group of problem players.)

(just want to check that everybody who wants to join has read the "reasons not to play" since I am well aware that this will put many people off.)

No problem. In that case I'd like to reserve Other World Call and Burnt Out (in the hopes of building a melee medic with a little blasting, which might become just a medic blaster when I get the concept done). Might need to pull a feat and a tech or two from Way of the Master, but nothing too complex.

Other than the GM templates, I don't plan on using any particular templates and such, but planning to have the following array before any possible template modifiers: Int 16/Con 16/Dex 16/Wis 12/Cha 10/Str 8

Are any feats given out for free/any other houserules we should be aware of?

Also, will we be able to get the fluff on some of these templates before we write up our character backgrounds and such?

Generally I would abstain from telling you this, but burnt out is the most specialised of the templates (pretty much nothing but ninjutsu) so you might wish to pick again. (this is simply to stop you from becoming disadvantaged by this)(any of the "any class ones would compliment this build)

While I am here, I may as well tell you that you are still academy students.

Hmm...actually, I'll stick with it and go with the nin heavy medic + elemental blasting idea. All nin, all the time. It'll stop me from playing the Tai + X archetypes I usually play.

In which case, change the stats to Int 16/Con 16/Dex 14/Wis 14/Cha 12/Str 8

just out of interest, would you allow homebrew?

I have a concept that uses a homebrew bloodline of mine, and I can send you a copy of it if you would be interested at all.

PS- as you've combined the two bloodlines together, how does that work with the ecl that you've given, and the notes surrounding them?

(+1 ECL take notes from first of the last.) And yes, provided that I see it first to check that it doesn't break my campaign.

Pm would work best, and do not write background yet, (may be influenced by your template.) If you are certain about your choice, then I will get to work on first of the last asap. (however it will not be done today, possibly by the weekend depending on my workload) (I have yet to write anything for this).

EDIT: just make sure that Jiraiya approves.

Second edit: ok, you can have that, but I get to make all of the 10% and save rolls behind "the screen" (to avoid game breaking such as one shotting the BBEG (also make sure that you do not go over the maximum +2 overall ECL at the beginning mark)

I would be interested in playing.. I am inexperienced in playing online. I am also unsure of how the times would differ as I live in England but if the times are still good over here I'm all up for it.

I like the look of the Light Dark Sealed if that's cool Smile

I'm a Scot, and as the times are GMT, as long as we can get up early enough, we should be ok (unless you have work or other things on at that time)

Well, yes that is fine, and for you guys, you should be looking at 2 o clock until 6 o clock (during the day, not the night) (assuming that I have worked that correctly, which I am pretty certain I have) yeah, light dark sealed is open, and now... taken

I am also going to be closing the people who can join here, we now have our group.

(inwardly groans again, how do you people do it?)

Ok, I guess I will get to work on the light dark seals. Anyway, I will also be releasing more info on the area (recent events, trivia on contacts, etc. Also, just to make sure I have four people SOUND OFF

It has long since been my belief that in order to be a GM you have to have a certain degree of masochism.

Aye, it is just that the three templates that are not developed at all... are picked (what are the chances)

(hmm, a very encouraging response to sound off)

Please, everybody who is in this campaign: SOUND OFF
