Hi, new DM (to both this system and DMing in general), and I'm working on putting the finishing touches on my preparations for my first session. I've read through the manual, and I am curious: if a technique does not specify whether it deals lethal or nonlethal damage, which should I assume it deals?

The closest I've found to answering this question is in the Complexity Rating descriptions for the techniques (page 256):

"D-Class...not expected to pack a lot of power or lethal force", "B-Class...often allow a shinobi to use lethal force against another", "A-Class...otherwise known as lethal or very dangerous techniques"

The specific technique that prompted me to ask the question is Hiakahou (Blazing Red Cannon) (page 354-355) which deals "1d4 point of fire damage"

Taking only the Complexity Rating descriptions into consideration, my best guess would be that, unless specified by a technique of a lower Complexity Rating, lethal damage only starts to come into play at B-Class but I am unsure.

If this is somewhere in the manual, I apologize in advance, but I truly cannot find it (have searched the entire document for both "lethal damage" and "nonlethal damage" and haven't been able to find it)

Basically unless it specifically says it deals non-lethal damage, then the technique's damage counts as lethal, regardless of Complexity Rating or anything else
