Under the "Extreme Speeds and Strength" section, it reads
Quote: | A creature suffers a -2 penalty to spot checks per rank above his after 0 to spot a character moving at extreme speeds, though a higher speed rank or high speed sight serves to lessen or nullify that penalty. |
Does this mean that a character moving at speed rank 1 or higher can essentially Hide in Plain Sight?

Even so, I'm still baffled as to how this mechanic works. If the spot check isn't opposed by a hide check, then what's it for? |

The spot check is opposed to the character's hide check. _________________ "It's like making a cake, but instead of a cake it's a game and instead of frosting I have no life."

I think what he is trying to ask is, how does moving fast make you hide behind a tree easier. |

I'm pretty sure the text says "So long as the character is not stationary". _________________ "It's like making a cake, but instead of a cake it's a game and instead of frosting I have no life."

By getting you behind the tree before he sees you. That's the sarcastic answer. For another answer that has been derived from comic books and a mind with too little to occupy it, he moves at an increasing rate of speed, allowing him to vibrate his molecules, in effect dispersing them through the air in a nonharmful way, allowing him to hide behind the air molecules.
No idea where that came from, but it sounds scientific enough to be plausible, if you overlook the obvious fact that I have no idea what I'm talkiing about.
This is mainly here for a laugh, so let it be known I'm only partially serious about it. |

Frankto, the text, unfortunately, does not say 'as long as the character is stationary'.
But, let's be sensible here. If an opponent can see you (aka, you're not hiding) there is no need for that opponent to make a Spot check, hrm?
The penalty simply applies for when the enemy attempts to make a Spot check to Spot a character or creature that is hiding.
And, it's only logical that these penalties only apply when trying to spot a moving character. After all, for speed to have any effect, one must be moving at that speed. _________________ Oy, this is going to be troublesome *sigh* |

Call me stupid.
Ok, now. How do you hide while moving? You run to your cover? I can't imagine other situation than trying to hide directly behind your enemy. I've been always confused about this rule, since I don't know where to apply it. I supposed it couldn't give you the benefits from hide in plain sight so... care to give me some examples?

You... hide behind cover? Move from the cover of a tree to another, or among thick bushes? _________________ "It's like making a cake, but instead of a cake it's a game and instead of frosting I have no life."

The point is, that, logically, if you are attempting to Hide while moving, you are less likely to be seen if you are faster. Simple as that. Has nothing to do with hiding while standing still. _________________ Oy, this is going to be troublesome *sigh* |

saw this show on tv once where they explained that the mind sees snapshots and there is a delay between them and different species see at different snapshot rates.
a fly has less time between snapshots that a human and a slug has more, they blew up a building and then showed how different species would view it.
so they showed how for a human we might see a rock roll across the ground but for a slug it looks like it is teleporting!
the fly sees it all in slow motion, like Haku said he saw stuff in slow motion. |
